County Native Succumbs in Ashtabula Home

E.D. Maurice, 51, Champaign county native and former Urbana school teacher, who had been superintendent of the Ashtabula city schools for 10 years, died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday in his Ashtabula home following a stroke.

He attended a board meeting at the high school Wednesday night, apparently in good health, but suffered the stroke about 2:00 a.m. after returning home. He was unconscious until the time of his death, two and a half hours later.

A native of Thackery, Supt. Maurice went to Ashtabula from Canton, being appointed superintendent of the city schools in that city in May 1940, a position he held until the time of his death.

Previously he taught in the Urbana schools, spent seven years as head of LaRue schools, was superintendent of Stark county's school system for five years, and served as principal of the Terre Haute schools.

He attended Wittenberg college, receiving a bachelor or arts degree, then took graduate work at Ohio State and Harvard universities.

He was a member of Harmony lodge No. 8 F. & A.M.

Survivors include his wife Beulah; two sons, James, at home, and William of Cleveland; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Greenawalt of Ashtabula; a sister, Mrs. Laurel Irvin of Springfield, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.V. Maurice of Thackery.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday by Reb. Wallace Johnson in Messiah Lutheran church at Ashtabula, while family services will be held at the Zerkle Lutheran church, Thackery, at 2:00 p.m. Sunday. The local Masonic lodge will have a part in the Sunday services at Thackery.

Burial will be made in Terre Haute cemetery.
