County Native Succumbs in Ashtabula Home

E.D. Maurice, 51, Champaign county native and former Urbana school teacher, who had been superintendent of the Ashtabula city schools for 10 years, died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday in his Ashtabula home following a stroke.

He attended a board meeting at the high school Wednesday night, apparently in good health, but suffered the stroke about 2:00 a.m. after returning home. He was unconscious until the time of his death, two and a half hours later.

A native of Thackery, Supt. Maurice went to Ashtabula from Canton, being appointed superintendent of the city schools in that city in May 1940, a position he held until the time of his death.

Previously he taught in the Urbana schools, spent seven years as head of LaRue schools, was superintendent of Stark county's school system for five years, and served as principal of the Terre Haute schools.

He attended Wittenberg college, receiving a bachelor or arts degree, then took graduate work at Ohio State and Harvard universities.

He was a member of Harmony lodge No. 8 F. & A.M.

Survivors include his wife Beulah; two sons, James, at home, and William of Cleveland; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Greenawalt of Ashtabula; a sister, Mrs. Laurel Irvin of Springfield, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.V. Maurice of Thackery.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday by Reb. Wallace Johnson in Messiah Lutheran church at Ashtabula, while family services will be held at the Zerkle Lutheran church, Thackery, at 2:00 p.m. Sunday. The local Masonic lodge will have a part in the Sunday services at Thackery.

Burial will be made in Terre Haute cemetery.

ST. PARIS -- Bert Stone, 87, of 140 W. Troy St., St. Paris, died at 4:45 a.m. today in Champaign County Hospital.  He had been hospitalized for two weeks.

He was born in Miami County, Cec. 30, 1875, the son of Robert and Anna Bell Stone. He has been a Champaign County resident for the past 63 years.

Stone had been a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Paris since 1901, and was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.  He was employed at a local furniture store for 38 years until his retirement.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Buelah Morris (sic) [Beulah Maurice], of St. Paris, a son, Robert Stone, with the U.S. Army in Korea; a brother, Clarence, of Casstown; four grandchildren. His wife, the former Ida Johnson, died in 1951.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Baker Funeral Home, St. Paris, with the Rev. Alfred Nothstine officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Bert Stone Succumbs Sunday in St. Paris Home

Mrs. Ida Bell Johnson Stone, 77, wife of Bert Stone of St. Paris, died in her home at 6:15 p.m. Sunday following an illness of eight months.

She was born June 4, 1874 in Allen county, Ind., the daughter of David and Sarah Ella Simms Johnson and was married to Mr. Stone on December 20, 1900.

Mrs. Stone came to Champaign county from Illinois 65 years ago. She was a member of the St. Paris Baptist church, it's (sic) Ladies Aid Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Mrs. Beulah Maurice of Springfield; a son, Sgt. Robert J. Stone, with the U.S. Army in Korea, and a brother, John Johnson of Springfield.

The body was taken to the Baker funeral home in St. Paris where friends may call this evening and until time of services. Time of services will not be announced until word is received from the son in Korea.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Bell Johnson Stone, 77, wife of Bert Stone, who died 6:45 p.m. Sunday in her St. Paris home, will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Baker funeral home at St. Paris.

The Rev. Rex G. Van Court will officiate at the services and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery, St. Paris.

Intro

Started a blog yesterday for research on one grandmother's family ancestry. And decided that it wasn't fair to the other grandparents. So this blog is dedicated to the family history of my other grandmother's parents (who are pictured in the 1943 photo in the blog header): Estell Deaton Maurice and Beulah Rebecca Stone.

I feel like I got most of my genes from these guys. They were smart and artistic, but Estell was quite goofy (though his goofiness might have been accidental, like mine). This apple hasn't fallen far from the ancestral tree.

This blog is intended to be a repository of information, where cousins, aunts, uncles, etc., can find/share/and contribute. I will share what I've found, along with snippets of the documents that support the link.

Please know that I am definitely a paper trail person. Hearsay and family stories are good as starting points, but I'm interested in the evidence, the documents, the photos. I have a huge folder on my hard drive full of census images, obituary clips, headstone photos, death certificates, etc. I have an equally large folder of incorrect information that I found in LDS files and in other pedigree charts.
